RTD Pt100 Temperature Sensor Probe, PTFE Lead (-50 to +250°C)

The RTD probe PPL1-P temperature sensor is suitable for the measurement of liquids and gases across a wide temperature range of -50 to +250°C. The 3-wire class thermocouple sensor gives excellent accuracy across the full measuring range.

The plain stem of the probe is made from 316 stainless steel and the tip is TIG welded closed to give a pressure-tight housing for the platinum resistance thermometer. We offer standard diameters of 3mm and 6mm in various standard lengths to suit your needs. The 3mm sensors have a pot seal to accommodate the cable.

The flying temperature lead sensor is fitted with 2 metres of high-performance PTFE (Teflon) screened lead which is practically chemically inert and is suitable for the full operating range of the sensor. The plated copper braid screen provides mechanical protection as well as providing the opportunity for electrical screening should it be required.

RTD Pt100 probes, also known as platinum resistance thermometers, offer high accuracy in temperature measurement due to their precise temperature coefficient of resistance tolerance.

These probes employ a sensing element made of platinum, which changes its electrical resistance predictably with temperature changes. The Pt100 is the most common RTD element type, calibrated at 0°C (32°F) to a resistance value of 100 ohms.

With a wide measurable temperature range from -50°C to +250°C and standard tolerance classes, our Pt100 probes provide reliable temperature readings across various applications.

However, the PTFE lead wire used in this particular model may exhibit a slightly wider tolerance band, resulting in less accuracy compared to higher-grade RTD probes. Nonetheless, Pt100 probes remain a preferred choice for their high accuracy and stability in temperature measurement tasks.

What is an RTD temperature probe?

What is a Pt100 probe?

A PT100 probe is a type of RTD (resistance temperature detector) that consists of a platinum resistance element. It is based on the principle that the electrical resistance of platinum varies predictably with temperature changes. The platinum wire serves as the sensing element, and its resistance is measured by passing a small electrical current through it.

The PT100 is the most common RTD, calibrated at 0°C (the most common calibration temperature), where it has a resistance value of 100 ohms. This base resistance, combined with the well-defined resistance vs temperature characteristics of platinum, allows for accurate temperature measurement over a wide range.

PT100 probes are available in various DIN (German Institute for Standardisation) classes, such as DIN Class B and DIN Class A, which define the tolerance or accuracy of the resistance element. The higher the DIN class, the tighter the combination of both base resistance tolerance and resistance-temperature relationship tolerance.

These probes are connected to the instrument's sensor input using lead wires, which can introduce some resistance error if not properly compensated for. However, PT100 probes are designed to be highly accurate, stable, and resistant to vibration and other environmental factors, making them suitable for numerous industrial and scientific applications where precise temperature measurement is critical.

What is a PTFE lead?

A PTFE lead refers to a lead or wire that is insulated with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) material. PTFE is a type of fluoropolymer known for its excellent electrical insulation properties and high resistance to heat, chemicals, and moisture.

PTFE leads are commonly used in various applications, including electrical and electronic industries, where reliable and durable insulation is required for transmitting signals or power while maintaining protection against external factors. The PTFE insulation ensures good electrical performance and flexibility while offering resistance to harsh environments.

What is the difference between a PT100 RTD probe and a thermocouple in terms of temperature measurement?

A PT100 RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) probe measures temperature by detecting changes in the resistance of a platinum element, providing excellent stability and accuracy.
